Key ideas
- Competency-based trust: PMs earn influence only by demonstrably knowing customers, data, and business better than anyone else. The “Bob test” — every team should aspire to a Bob-level expert.
- Reference customer technique: PMF = threshold of customers willing to publicly recommend. B2B 6-8, B2C 15-25. Don’t launch without reviews ready.
- Certificate of appreciation: solving someone else’s problem so well they give something back (revenue, loyalty, referral) is the true measure of product value.
- Coaching as the daily job: doing PM ≠ getting better at PM — the manager’s job is the latter. Companies fail by not creating practice arenas.
- Promotion before title: learn to do the next job before being given it. Practice in protected environments where mistakes carry no leverage.
- Teach me or help you: trust-acceleration by asking the most influential person to teach you — forces a relationship and transfers their social trust.
