Brandon Chu

Brandon Chu is VP of Product at Shopify, where he has worked for seven years across core product, platform, and developer ecosystem roles, eventually leading “Product Acceleration” (Shopify’s internal investment/incubation function). Former co-founder of Tunezy (fan experience platform for YouTube musicians); former PM at FreshBooks. Active angel investor (~60 companies). Known for widely-circulated Medium writing on PM craft (2015–2018, now paused). X/Twitter: @BrandonMChu.

Key ideas

  • Writing as career lever: 40-hour Medium posts built trust with Tobi (CEO) and with new hires. Writing externally created more internal influence than internal memos. Writing crystallises mental models at the moment of figuring them out.
  • Decision prioritisation: assess importance first (reversible?, high user impact?); spend all time on critical few; go with gut or delegate everything else.
  • Platform PM: long cycles (2+ years from decision to end-user experience); designing a canvas for developers, not an end experience; must establish constituent stack-ranking principles before any technical or design decisions.
  • Shopify culture: everyone owns product thinking; PM = servant leader who helps teams ship the right thing at the right time in the right way; 30–40% of PM team are ex-founders.
  • Bursts: Shopify’s remote-work solution — frictionless in-person team gatherings triggered by a one-click internal app. Remove the bad of commuting; keep the good of creative intensity.
